Lady Warriors nip Laurel
Mohawk (39) Vs. Laurel (37)
Feb 01, 2011
No one thought about Taylor Yarletts when the game was on the line.

She hadn’t scored a basket for the first 31:57, but her first field goal of the night gave Mohawk a Section 2-AA victory over Laurel.

Yarletts hit the game-winning layup with three seconds remaining after trailing every quarter up until the fourth.

“We ran our offense the last 53 seconds of the game,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said. “Taylor came wide open and made an easy layup.”

While Yarletts sank the decisive score, O’Lare said Katie Hoover was the reason the Lady Warriors (2-7 section, 6-13 overall) were in a position to win. She scored eight points and grabbed a team-best 13 rebounds. She helped Mohawk hold the Lady Spartans (3-7, 5-13) to just 12 second-half points.

“She was the main ingredient as to why we won this basketball game,” O’Lare said. “She’s been busting her tail since August, and somehow she’s made it through. She played great defense and just had a great game. She played in the middle of the defense and cleaned up the misses. She came through big time for us, defensively and rebounding the basketball.”

Brooke Shasteen scored a game-high 16 points for Mohawk.

Becca Kerr played for the first time since injuring her knee in a game on Jan. 3. She scored nine points, with eight coming in the first half. Marisa Wallas netted a team-best 11 points, nine of which came in the first half.
