Fast start boosts Laurel girls
Laurel (54) Vs. Wilmington (43)
Dec 30, 2014
A 20-6 opening quarter propelled the Lady Spartans to a win over Wilmington in the Union Booster Tournament.
“It was a great first quarter,” Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. “Second quarter wasn’t bad, just some crazy bounces and we picked up a ton of fouls. It was just bad breaks and that slowed us down.”
Ellen Shaffer led all scorers with 30 points and added 10 rebounds. Kristin Dicks tallied nine markers and seven assists and Shelby Miles added eight points and nine boards for Laurel (4-6).
Hannah Drake scored 12 points for the Lady ’Hounds (3-5), but was limited to only three field goals. Shevitz credits Dicks for containing Wilmington’s leading scorer on the season.
“Kristin played her baseline to baseline and held her to three field goals,” Shevitz said.
Laurel will battle Union at 6 p.m. in the championship game of the Union Booster Tournament.
