Cornell stifled Union’s offensive attack in the first half of a 64-51 Section 1-A verdict played on the Raiders’ home floor.
The Scotties (0-1, 5-5) were outscored 21-2 in the second quarter for a 40-11 halftime deficit.
“They jumped on us pretty good in the first half,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “I don’t know if it was because of us not playing for a week or not. But they got us out of our game a little bit and they took advantage of it.”
The Scotties battled in the second half, outscoring Cornell, 40-24. The Raiders (1-0, 9-1) are ranked No. 5 in the WPIAL in Class A by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
“In the second half, our kids played really hard,” Smialowski said. “We’re going to bounce back. The guys are a hard working group.
“In the second half, we played a lot more like what we’ve been playing.”
Joe Salmen posted 15 points for the Scotties and Markel Peace was next with 10 markers and 10 rebounds. Tre Major also grabbed 10 boards.
