Sewickley girls edge Union
Sewickley (43) Vs. Union (42)
Jan 11, 2011
Sewickley Academy’s Nuge Vaccarelli made a free throw with less than a second remaining to keep Union from its first winning streak of the season.
Vaccarelli drove the length of the floor with six seconds left and was fouled during a layup attempt. She made one of two free throws to seal the Section 1-A victory for the Lady Panthers (3-2, 4-4).
“We played very well in the second half,” Union coach Brian Fadden said. “We were behind most of the game, and we just couldn’t get over the hump. We took one lead in the fourth and they took it right back. To our credit, we were down the whole game and kept fighting back.”
The Lady Scots (0-4, 2-10) trailed by nine at the half, but went on a 21-10 run to take a two-point lead late in the fourth quarter. Sewickley Academy then tied it at 42, which set up Vaccarelli’s final play.
Union’s Savannah Partridge led all scorers with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. Reed Mango paced the Lady Panthers with 13 points.
