Ellwood girls edge Aliquippa in OT
Ellwood City (59) Vs. Quip (57)
Feb 04, 2010
Ellwood City Lincoln High coach Bill Gottuso has preached quality foul shooting all season.
At the end of each practice, he forces his Lady Wolverines to make two consecutive shots before leaving.
Last night in a WPIAL nonsection matchup against Aliquippa, the hard work paid off for Ellwood City in the form of a 59-57 overtime victory.
Sisters Michelle and Nicole Nocera connected on four critical shots from the charity stripe in the extra frame to lift the Lady Wolverines (8-10) to their eighth nonsection victory of the year.
Ellwood City has lost 102 straight section games.
“We’re not used to being in close games,” Gottuso said. “Tonight was just an extenuation of practice.”
Aliquippa’s Jaclyn Watkins, who scored a team-high 18 points, made a layup with one second left in regulation to force overtime.
Late in the extra period, Michelle Nocera tied the game at 57-57 with two foul shots. Then on the Lady Quips’ next possession, Nicole stole the ball and was fouled as she attempted a breakaway layup. She connected on both shots from the foul line to seal the win.
Michelle Nocera finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds. Nicole added six markers and seven assists.
Freshman Asia Borders ripped down 13 rebounds for Ellwood City, which takes on Center tonight in a Section 2-AAA contest.
“It was a coming out game for her tonight,” Gottuso said of Borders.
Aliquippa fell to 8-11 overall.
