Becca Kerr continued her stellar 2009-10 season Monday night.
The Laurel High junior tallied a game-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds to lead the Lady Spartans to a 42-35 WPIAL Section 2-AA victory at Shenango.
Kerr, who came into the game averaging 15 points, now has nine double-digits performances on the season.
“She certainly put forth a strong effort tonight,” Laurel coach Jenn McGarrah said. “She’s worked really hard and it’s finally paying off for her and our team.”
The Lady Spartans (3-3 section, 6-6 overall) jumped out to a 22-13 lead at halftime, but Shenango didn’t go away.
The Lady Wildcats (1-5, 8-6) pulled to within 38-35 in the fourth quarter, but Kerr thwarted Shenango’s comeback by nailing a jumper from the foul line.
“They would get a little bit of momentum and we would answer with something,” McGarrah said. “I thought we played well enough to win. We had some mistakes but we were able to overcome them.”
Jackie Schlemmer collected 12 rebounds, five blocks and five assists for Laurel.
Carly Senko led Shenango with 12 points, followed by Jessica Kusnierz with 10.
The Lady Spartans will go for a second straight win against Riverside on Thursday. Laurel has won only two straight games once this season.
“We’ve had a very up and down season,” McGarrah said. “We can’t seem to put together a couple wins. Now, we’re heading into the second round of the season and we must put ourselves in some winning situations.”
