Jan 19, 2010
The Lady Lancers overcame turnovers and poor foul shooting to beat New Brighton in a Section 2-AA overtime thriller.
Neshannock (3-3, 7-5) made 11 of 22 from the charity stripe and committed 23 giveaways, but defense and timely baskets lifted them to their fifth straight win.
The Lady Lancers missed the front end of a one-and-one with 18 seconds left, giving New Brighton’s Lauren Pier the opportunity to make a game-tying 3-pointer.
But in the overtime, Neshannock scored the first five points. Caitlin Binder then converted two foul shots with seven seconds left to give the Lady Lancers a three-point lead.
“We had a tough time,” Neshannock coach Luann Grybowski said. “When we started to do things right, we were OK. We’re winning close games, so I’m not complaining.”
Chelsea Kauffman led Neshannock with 22 points, four assists and three steals. Ericka Warvell added nine points and eight rebounds. Binder finished with six points, seven rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Ashley Patton contributed 12 points for the Lady Lancers.
Jasmine Oravitz led New Brighton (1-5, 6-8) with 14 points.
