Union girls roll to victory
Union (33) Vs. Propel Andrew Street (19)
Feb 06, 2017
Freshman Madison Wynn powered the Union High girls basketball team to victory Monday night.
Wynn turned in 11 points and pulled down six rebounds as the Lady Scots topped WPIAL Section 1-1A visitor Propel Andrew Street, 33-19.
Senior Tessa Shaffer matched Wynn with 11 points for Union.
The win is the second of the season for Union (2-8 section, 2-17 overall), which has played a number of underclasssmen while looking to lay a foundation for the future.
"It's good that they got a taste of winning," Union coach Brian Heaney said. "It's nice to win games, even if it's only been a couple times. Lately we've been playing better and I always tell the girls that even though it may not show on the scoreboard, they're getting better. They've really come out with a positive attitude and worked hard and, hopefully, we can keep that going as we get near the offseason."
The Lady Scots held a 7-0 lead after the first quarter and never trailed the Lady Panthers (0-10, 0-19) in the contest.
"The girls knew going into the year that we were young and inexperienced and it might be kind of rough," Heaney said. "But I like the way we've practiced and we've been competitive throughout. We wanted to win this one to finish the (section) year out strong and it's nice to get a section win."
Majesty Alford topped Propel Andrew Street with 10.
Union is back in action at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at non-section opponent Aliquippa.
