Feb 05, 2016
The Wilmington High boys basketball team flirted with a second upset of West Middlesex Friday night.
But once again, the Greyhounds came up just short.
The Greyhounds lost to the District 10, Region 2-AA leading Big Reds 54-52 in overtime on the road Friday night.
Wilmington took West Middlesex to the wire last month before losing, 64-58.
"We had our opportunity, but we just couldn't finish it," Greyhounds' coach Mike Jeckavitch said. "We were close. I was very proud of our kids for hanging in there and taking a great team to the wire once again.”
The Big Reds are 9-1 in the region, 13-7 overall. The Greyhounds are tied for third in the region at 5-5, 10-10 overall.
Spencer DeMedal led Wilmington with 19 points. Matt Zimmer and Jimmy Powers had five rebounds each and DeMedal added four assists.
The Greyhounds were down two in the extra session when Reese Bender made a layup to tie the score with under 10 seconds left. West Middlesex drove and scored with 2.6 seconds left and DeMedal's half-court shot hit the backboard as time expired. Powers had a chance to win the game in regulation, but his own half-court shot bounced off the rim.
