The Shenango High girls basketball team knew what was at stake Thursday night.

In a deafening Beaver Falls gym, Shenango overcame the Lady Tigers to secure the fourth and final WPIAL Section 1-AA playoff bid in a 62-58 victory.

“It’s a great feeling,” Shenango coach Jason Rankin said. “Especially the way we did it. To go into a place like Beaver Falls and eliminate them and win the game the way we did, it’s tremendous.”

Shenango (6-4, section, 11-8 overall) outscored Beaver Falls 22-16 in the final quarter after trailing by two heading into the last eight minutes. Neither team truly built a stable lead, as Beaver Falls held a six-point advantage and Shenango’s largest lead was seven.

“I think one of the things that we have on our side is that we have four seniors,” Rankin said. “In the past, I think they would have lost that game. Between the crowd noise and whatever was going on, it would have psyched them out.”

The Lady Wildcats did not fold in the closely-contested bout. Carolyn Peterson’s bucket with 3:20 gave Shenango the lead and Jacqui Baker hit a pair of free throws with under two minutes to pad the lead, one the Lady Wildcats would not relinquish.

“It wasn’t like we were playing a team that wasn’t very good,” Rankin said. “It’s a good team at home and it could’ve been one of those games where we packed it in. But we didn’t.”

Angelina Sibeto and Samantha Seaburn each scored 17 points, while Sibeto posted four assists and Seaburn grabbed 14 rebounds.

Jacqui Baker added 14 points and eight rebounds, a tribute to a boost of confidence as of late for the forward.

“It’s confidence building from (assistant coach) Dom Joseph and I think it’s us telling her that it’s not a one or two-girl team. She’s got good foot work and the shots she hit tonight were good, she hit a couple elbow jumpers. (Her confidence is) sky high because we work with her and keep telling her she has the ability. She has to let it loose and play and it worked out tonight.”
