Laurel (50) Vs. Riverside (79)
Jan 18, 2016
The Lady Panthers built a 22-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 79-50 Section 1-AA home win over the Lady Spartans.
"We're young and we got off to a slow start on the road," Laurel coach Jessica Shevitz said. "It felt like everything they put up went in. But my girls didn't quit."
Diana Pontius and Caroline Gibson provided 15 points apiece to lead the Lady Spartans (1-7, 5-11). Pontius' points came on five 3-pointers, giving her 38 for the season, which is a school record, breaking the mark she set last year of 37. It's also the second record Pontius has set this season. She drained six triplicates in a game earlier in the campaign for her previous record.
"She's excited to get that," Shevitz said of Pontius' record. "It's always great to get a school record."
Gibson, a freshman, added seven rebounds and five steals.
"Gibson got to the line well, too," Shevitz said. "You can't ask much more of her; she's really working hard."
Katie Stang supplied a game-best 23 markers for Riverside (7-1, 15-1).
