The New Castle High girls basketball team got a big nonleague victory last night.
The Lady ’Canes picked up a 48-36 win at Blackhawk, which competes in WPIAL Class AAA — one division below New Castle.
“This was a good win,” New Castle coach Luann Grybowski said.
New Castle’s offense was balanced as four players reached double figures.
Abby Allen paced the Lady ’Canes (12-3) with 13 points and five assists. Jazelle Dennis followed with 12 points and five assists.
Logan Hartman had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds. Nikki Wise had 10 points and five boards.
New Castle took advantage of 20 turnovers and controlled the boards, 35-23. The Lady ’Canes connected on 17 of 45 shots from the field.
“I’m really happy with the defensive end,” Grybowski said. “Our rebounding was excellent. We limited them to only four offensive rebounds the entire game. We cut the turnovers down, too. We had 12, but only two in the second half.”
Tasia Wise, who was the top girls scorer in Lawrence County last week, sat out for the second straight night.
According to Grybowski, Wise was benched because she missed practice and because she is still recovering from a sore back. Wise is averaging 14.4 points.
Grybowski expects Wise to return tonight against Seneca Valley.
Beth DeLuca led all scorers with 23 points for the Lady Cougars (11-6).
