Ellwood girls top Shenango
Ellwood City (34) Vs. Shenango (30)
Jan 22, 2015
It wasn’t pretty, but the Ellwood City Lincoln High girls basketball team came away with a victory.
Neither the Lady Wolverines nor host Shenango had success shooting the ball, as Ellwood City walked away with a 34-30 nonsection win.
“Our shots were just off,” Ellwood City coach Jolene Servick said. “The girls limited their turnovers, but I don’t even want to take a guess at what our shooting percentages were. But they stepped up and did what they had to do get the win.”
Karington Ketterer led Ellwood City (7-9) with 14 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
Carolyn Peterson paced the Lady Wildcats (8-7) with 13 points.
Shenango started off strong, scoring 12 first-quarter points, but went cold after that.
“We couldn’t get anything to go,” Shenango coach Brian Turk said. “We took plenty of shots and nothing was going.”
“After the first period, nothing was going for us. It’s like throwing darts at balloons on the board.”
Ellwood City was able to secure the victory thanks to more frequent trips to the charity stripe.
The Lady Wolverines were 9 for 19 from the free throw line, while Shenango only hit two of its four attempts.
“I thought that was a big difference down the stretch,” Turk said. “Both teams took plenty of shots, but it was just an ugly game from the first period on.
