OLSH edges Scotties
Our Lady of Sacred Heart (39) Vs. Union (38)
Jan 30, 2013
In a game that would help determine the makeup of Section 1-A come playoff time, Union’s offense couldn’t deliver.
The Scotties managed just 15 of 66 shooting from the field in a loss at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart.
“That was pretty much the whole game. They sagged off us defensively a little,” Union coach Dave Smialowski said. “They were hoping we didn’t hit any shots, and we didn’t. We had open looks, we just didn’t knock them down.”
The Scotties (4-2, 13-3) upended the Chargers earlier in the season, 67-50. The rematch told a different tale, as Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (5-2, 15-3) was able to control Union’s transition game, limiting it to 23 points through three quarters. With the win, the Chargers moved ahead of the Scotties by a half a game in the section standings.
“Where we struggled was on the offensive end. It’s always a tough place to play down at OLSH,” Smialowski said. “For them, they really took away our transition. I don’t think we pushed it as well as we could have. That’s a credit to them. They sprinted back and they dug in.”
Union was playing its first game in 10 days. The Scotties game against Leechburg last Friday was postponed because of weather conditions. Markel Peace was the only player for the Scotties to reach double-digit scoring with 17 points. Benjamin Young followed with nine.
“I think we’re fine. The kids played hard and the effort was there,” Smialowski said. “This group is going to bounce back.”
Ian Shrenk notched 14 points for the winners. Kendall Paige followed with 10.
