Mohawk stays unbeaten in section
Mohawk (30) Vs. Riverside (25)
Jan 11, 2013
The Mohawk High girls basketball team delivered down the stretch last night.
The Lady Warriors scored the game’s final 11 points to rally for a 30-25 WPIAL Section 2-AA home victory over Riverside.
Mohawk (5-0 section, 9-4 overall) trailed 25-19 with just under three minutes left before mounting the comeback. Shelby Brown was 5 of 7 from the foul line during the stretch for the Lady Warriors.
“It just happened so fast,” Mohawk coach Mike O’Lare said of the final moments. “(Riverside) went into a delay to kill the clock.
“With the score being what it was and two good defensive teams going at each other, at some point you have to take a risk. We started to press a little bit and it seemed to kickstart us. Then we got into a position where they had to foul us.”
The win keeps the Lady Warriors in first place in the section by a half-game over Beaver Falls (5-1, 7-6).
Lucia Fee and Hannah Morrow teamed up to limit the Lady Panthers’ top duo of Alexis Deep and Nicole Mansfield. Both girls came in averaging just under 20 points a game.
Deep and Mansfield both scored 11 points each to lead Riverside.
“Mansfield and Deep are a two-headed monster,” O’Lare said. “Fee and Morrow did an outstanding job on those two; they do things that don’t always get into the scoring column.”
Brown netted a game-high 14 points for Mohawk and Paige Ruby was next with 10. Ruby drained two clutch field goals in the fourth frame.
