The Wilmington High girls basketball team started slowly Saturday.
But the Lady Greyhounds regrouped in the second quarter.
Wilmington erased a three-point deficit after one period and cruised to a 57-29 District 10, Region 2-AA victory over Lakeview.
With the win, the Lady Greyhounds (4-4 region, 9-8 overall) keep their postseason hopes alive.
Wilmington outscored the Lady Sailors (0-8, 1-14), 16-4, in the second quarter.
“We continued with the man defense and we just talked a lot more and that made a big difference for us,” Lady Greyhounds coach Brandy Sanford said of the second quarter. “It’s kind of hard not to take them lightly.
“I had a long talk to them at halftime that you have to play your game no matter who you’re playing. I had said a little of that after the first quarter and that seemed to help.”
Haley Marett paced Wilmington with 15 points, while Mackenzie Hiers and Julie Burns added 10 points apiece. Burns recorded 11 rebounds and Hiers handed out seven assists.
“I really like the balance I got from the girls,” Sanford said. “I like it that we don’t have an all-star shooter. Sometimes that hurts us in the end, but I really like the balance we have on this team.”
