Neshannock bounced back from a tough night at the foul line Friday for a key Section 2-AA win over Shenango.
The Lancers (3-1, 8-3) were just 15 of 35 from the charity stripe against Beaver, but they came through with a 12-for-15 effort against the Wildcats (1-4, 5-6).
“We went from one extreme to the other,” Neshannock coach John Corey said of his team’s free-throw shooting. “We have to stabilize that and become more steady.
“This was definitely a good section win for us.”
John Sansone led the Lancers with 19 points, four steals and three assists. He was 6 for 6 at the foul line, including 4 for 4 in the fourth quarter when Neshannock outscored Shenango 15-9.
David Burkes chipped in 10 points for the winners.
Brandon Marinelli, averaging a county-high 22.1 points a game, was limited to just six markers. He grabbed eight rebounds as well.
The Lancers took an eight-point lead two minutes into the fourth quarter and held on.
“This is a tough section loss,” Wildcats coach Bob McQuiston said. “You have to win your section games at home.
“The guys were pumped up, but Neshannock is a good, veteran team.”
Jordan O’Hara tossed in a team-best 20 points for Shenango, but none of which came in the second half. Four of his five field goals came from behind the arc.
“I thought they tightened up pretty well on O’Hara in the second half,” McQuiston said. “We didn’t get him the ball enough. He was hitting his outside shots in the first half.”
Tynen Greer was next with 10 points and five assists for the Wildcats. Mike Linz posted eight points and 10 boards.
