Wilmington girls top Mercer
Wilmington (42) Vs. Mercer (33)
Dec 24, 2010
A change in defense sparked Wilmington to a District 10, Region 2-AA victory over Mercer.
The Lady Greyhounds (4-2) trailed 10-7 after one quarter, but took control in the second and led, 24-16, by halftime. Wilmington coach Brandy Sanford said she made a switch after the first quarter.
“I actually put a press on, and defensively my girls just took over the game,” she said. “We’ve been working on it a lot in practice and I really like the way the girls play the defense. It seemed to rattle Mercer a little bit. In the half court they’re pretty strong, but if you rattle them a little bit in the full court, it slows them up and doesn’t allow that half-court set to go so smoothly.”
Haley Marett and Julie Burns each scored 12 to lead the Greyhounds. Freshman Tessa Sikora snared a team-high six rebounds in her first varsity action. Wilmington also made 14 of 18 from the free-throw line compared to 1 of 6 for Mercer.
