Laurel 68,
Seneca Valley 63
The Spartans' Mason Mraz posted a triple-double 19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists in a 68-63 nonsection home win over WPIAL Class AAAA member Seneca Valley.
"These guys played fabulous," Laurel coach Ken Locke said. "Mason did what we expected him to do and Jake Wilson was diving all over the floor."
The Spartans (4-1), who are ranked No. 4 in the WPIAL in Class AA by the Post-Gazette, trailed 20-9 after one quarter and 38-29 at recess.
"It wasn't what they were doing. They were doing the same stuff the whole game," Locke said of his team digging a first-quarter hole. "We missed some shots early. We couldn't get anything to fall early on.
"Then we were able to get going. I think our guys settled in a little bit and kept battling back. This was a good win for us."
Laurel led 66-61 with about 40 seconds to go and the Raiders (3-2) cut it to 66-63 with 20 seconds left. But Coltin Esposito got open for a layup with 10 seconds to go to sew up the win.
Jordan Dantico cashed in 15 points for the Spartans, all of which came in the second half. Scott Siddall and Jacob Wilson chipped in with 14 points apiece. Wilson contributed eight rebounds and eight assists as well.
Chris Hart netted 17 points to lead Seneca Valley.
