Lakeview (49) Vs. Wilmington (58)
Jan 18, 2008
Wilmington did what it needed to do last night.
The Greyhounds remained in the thick of the District 10/Region 2-AA playoff race with a 57-49 victory over Lakeview.
Wilmington is now 5-4 in the region (8-8 overall) and remains in position to finish among the top three or four teams in the league which will secure playoff spots.
“If we’d have lost, we’d have put our backs to the wall, but with this win, we still control our own destiny,” Greyhounds’ coach Will Harris said.
Wilmington’s Dallas Hartman played the game of his career with a 20-point, 21-rebound effort.
“He owned the paint tonight,” Harris said. “No one was stopping him.
“It was a grind-out game and that worked to our advantage, because we’re big inside and strong. Even our guards are strong kids. In the first half, we took too many perimeter shots, but in the second half we went inside and it was tough to stop us.”
Shane Wagner led Wilmington with 24 points. He made 7 of 8 free throws, including 5 of 6 in the final 2 1/2 minutes.
Harris also praised the play of senior guard Chris Burns.
“Chris only scored five points, but he did a great job on defense against Dylan Bertin,” he said.
Bertin, who came into the game as Lakeview’s leading scorer, was held to just 10 points.
Lakeview, which dressed just 10 players for the game (prompting four-minute quarters for the JV preliminary), slipped to 3-8 and 3-12.
