Mohawk girls pull away from Laurel in fourth quart

For three quarters, the Mohawk and Laurel high school girls basketball teams went back and forth.

Once the final eight minutes began, the Lady Warriors made sure it no longer was a close contest.

Mohawk outscored the visiting Lady Spartans 20-9 in the final quarter to take a 56-44 victory in a Section 1-AA battle. The Lady Warriors only led by one point after the third quarter.

Aliya Gage and Erin Giancola continued their offensive onslaught for Mohawk (1-0 section, 4-0 overall) with 18 and 16 points, respectively. On the year, Gage is averaging a team-high 15.7 points, followed closely by Giancola's 15.

Kristin Dicks led the Lady Spartans (0-1, 2-2) with 12 points, while Aleyce Bell added 10 points. Laurel's leading scorer heading into the contest, Diana Pontius, was held without a field goal.
