The Wilmington High boys basketball team closed the season on a high note last night.

Spencer DeMedal poured in a game-high 29 points to lead the Greyhounds to a season-ending 61-52 win over Sharpsville in a District 10, Region 2-AA contest.

DeMedal, a sophomore, netted 17 of his points in the fourth quarter when Wilmington (5-7 region, 7-15 overall) put the game away.

“DeMedal is one of those players that if he can score, we’ll be in just about any game we’re playing in,” Greyhounds coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “He kind of dominated tonight and basically put the team on his back in the fourth quarter.”

DeMedal was 9 of 16 from the foul line for the game, including 7 of 11 at the stripe in the pivotal fourth frame.

Reese Bender followed DeMedal’s effort with seven markers and Colton Marett was next with six.

Travis Brumbaugh handed out a team-high six assists for Wilmington and Marc Peoples led the squad with eight boards.

The Greyhounds led 16-9 after one quarter and 29-19 at the half. But the Blue Devils (0-12, 1-21) outscored the visitors 18-10 in the third period to trim the deficit to 39-37 heading to the fourth.

Jeckavitch was pleased with how his team came out ready to play despite being out of the playoff race.

“I thought the kids played hard,” he said. “It wasn’t the season we expected to have. But it feels good to end the season on a high note.” Dane Smith supplied a team-high 21 points for Sharpsville, which is coached by former Neshannock coach Jim Smiley.
