It was a simple concept for the Shenango High girls basketball team.

Control its own destiny. Beat visiting Beaver Falls and earn a trip to the WPIAL Class AA postseason.

The Lady Wildcats ran with that and shut down Beaver Falls en route to a 38-18 victory that clinched the fourth and final WPIAL Section 1-AA berth.

Shenango (6-5 Section 1-AA, 12-8 overall) held the Lady Tigers to two first-half points and took a 15-2 lead into the half.

“That’s a blessing,” Shenango coach Brian Turk said. “It’s a bonus going into tomorrow. I thought the girls really responded, holding them to two points and 18 overall. Back to back games is always tough, but we’ll take the win tonight.”

Angelina Sibeto paced the Lady Wildcats with 12 points, followed by Carolyn Peterson’s 11-point performance.

TreAuna Slappy totaled nine points for Beaver Falls (4-7, 7-11).

Neither team shot the ball nor rebounded well defensively in the first half. But Shenango was able to hit shots when it needed it and contested the Lady Tigers’ shots enough to continue to force misses.

“We knew they were coming into our house ready to play,” Turk said. “They had a stake in that last spot as well. I’m very proud of the girls for rebounding, they really showed their character.”

Shenango finished the game with 10 offensive rebounds. Peterson, Samantha Seaburn and Emma Rich all corralled five total boards.

The win comes after a 51-38 loss to Neshannock on Tuesday, the start of a three-game stretch in as many days.

Shenango wraps up the week when it hosts Mohawk at 7:30 tonight.

“We controlled our own destiny, we knew that the outside games were bonuses and could help our position,” Turk said. “But we knew we had to take care of business. It was huge for the program, hopefully we have the program under control and with some structure.”
