The Wildcats were looking for redemption and found it against visiting Section 1-AA opponent Laurel.
The Spartans clinched a playoff berth despite the loss.
Shenango (4-6, 9-7) fell to Laurel, 91-49, in its first meeting and wanted to exact some revenge on the Spartans.
“I think it was more or less the guys wanted to prove something,” Shenango coach Bob McQuiston said. “They handled us pretty easily the first time. I thought our last two practices were intense and we came out tonight and I was pleased with how we played.”
James Micco and Ryan Smith tallied 17 points each for Shenango, with Micco adding 11 rebounds to his total. Brenton Booher followed with 15 points, while Christian O’Hara tossed in 11.
“We’ve got guys that can shoot the ball but when you have an inside-out game it opens everything up,” McQuiston said of Micco. “He was working hard in the paint and the guards did a good job of finding him. We feel he can be a double-double guy every night. They realize what we have in him. That makes your offense better when you cant just focus on one guy.”
Scott Siddall paced the Spartans (8-2, 13-4) with 21 points. Mason Mraz added 13 and Jacob Wilson contributed 10.
Shenango used a 3-2 zone to help stifle Laurel, holding them to 53 points to equal a season low. The Spartans were held to 53 points one other time in a 67-53 loss to Our Lady of Sacred Heart.
“They came out in a zone and they did it the whole game,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “We didn’t have any answers, that caused a little bit of trouble for us.”
The Wildcats also drew three charges, two from Matt Benson and one from Paul Turco, to keep momentum on their side.
“You need a blue collar guy like them taking some charges,” McQuiston said. “Those are plays that can get you the win in a tight game. Those guys make those plays and we need that.”
