A tune-up game heading into the second half of section play turned into a battle last night.
The Union High boys basketball team used a strong third-quarter to edge visiting Mohawk, 56-50, in a nonsection meeting.
Union (7-7) held a five-point advantage heading into the second half and let its lead balloon to 15 following a 20-10 advantage. Mohawk fought back, but it was too late.
“It’s an exhibition game before the second half starts, but it was nice to get the win,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “(Mohawk coach) Rob Fadden had them playing hard, but we were able to hold on.”
The Scotties featured three double-digit scorers, led by Garrison Bell’s 16-point, six steal performance. Constantin Padure followed with 14 points and nine rebounds, while Cornell Charles tallied 10 points.
“Padure got us on the mark,” Stanley said. “He shot really well tonight and that’s a bonus. We talked about it, it’s a different guy every night. They’re very unselfish they don’t care who does it. When one guy gets hot the others find him and it’s working well.”
Spencer McConahy paced the Warriors (1-13) with 18 points and Ricky Malutic contributed 10 points.
