The Neshannock High boys basketball team got a much-needed boost last night.
The Lancers earned a 70-68 WPIAL Section 2-AA victory over Summit Academy on the road.
Michael Richards, who made 10 of 12 from the foul line in the fourth quarter, sank a free throw with six seconds left to put Neshannock ahead by two. The Knights drove the length of the floor, but missed a game-tying attempt at the buzzer.
“We needed something,” Neshannock coach Jim Smiley said. “With any athlete, a positive reinforcement goes a long way. After having some heart-breaking losses, this is what the kids needed and they went out and earned it.”
Richards and Mike Conglose paced the Lancers (2-4 section, 5-8 overall) with 14 points apiece. Conglose added six rebounds.
Joey Fontana followed with 13 points and Ryan Iorio chipped in with 10 and five rebounds. J.T. Graham also grabbed five boards to go with nine points.
Neshannock made 22 of 42 from the floor and took advantage of 21 Summit Academy turnovers.
“We were up by as many as 15 midway through the game and they just began scoring,” Smiley said. “The turnovers really helped us.”
Laron Green led Summit Academy (3-3, 6-8) with 16 points.
