Laurel girls fall
Cornell (45) Vs. Laurel (41)
Dec 16, 2013
The Lady Spartans came up just short against Cornell in the championship game of the Cornell Tipoff Tournament.
The Lady Raiders (3-1) made just enough foul shots in the fourth quarter — 9 of 18 — to put the game away. Cornell was just 15 of 34 from the charity stripe for the contest.
“This was no more than a five-point game the entire way; it was a very tight game,” Lady Spartans coach Jessica Shevitz said. “We should have won this game.”
Rachael Baker and Ellen Shaffer posted 10 points each for Laurel. Shaffer added eight rebounds and four blocks, while Baker chipped in with six rebounds.
The Lady Spartans (3-1) were playing their third game of the week. Laurel was 13 of the 21 at the foul line.
“We left eight points out there from the foul line and we missed seven layups,” Shevitz said. “There’s no reason why we shouldn’t have walked out of there with the win, other than fatigue.
“I don’t like it, but I understand it.”
Nicole Byron led all scorers with 15 points for Cornell.
