Laurel (54) Vs. Freedom (44)
Jan 10, 2013
The Laurel High boys are starting to figure out this winning thing.
A strong third quarter by Scott Siddall led the Spartans over visiting Freedom in nonsection action, 54-44.
“He scored 13 of his 15 points in the third,” Laurel coach Ken Locke said. “We talked to the kids about coming out strong in the second half. Recently, we’ve come out of the break not being ready to play. We were really able to open up our lead this game and that really helped out.”
Laurel (4-9) has won three of its last six games under first-year coach Locke after starting the season 1-7.
“Some of it had to do with our tough opening schedule, but we’re definitely getting more comfortable.” Locke said. “We’re definitely correcting our mistakes a little bit at a time. Our guys have been working hard for us.”
Siddall led the winners with 15 points, including 8 of 8 from the free-throw line. Josh Dando was next with 13 and a team-high five steals. Josh Finley scored in double digits with 12 points.
“Dando has really stepped it up for us,” Locke said. “He’s been the one consistent guy for us. Finally, other guys stepped up here with him.”
Zach Wilson provided seven points and eight rebounds coming off the bench for the Spartans.
“His effort and overall enthusiasm was there,” Locke said. “I thought he was key.”
Laurel allowed 12 combined points to Freedom (1-10) in the second and third quarters.
“We just came out and put a bit more pressure and moved our defense up,” Locke said. “The boys picked up their intensity defensively. We were able to get them to turn the ball over and get a few easy buckets.”
