Union gets past ‘short-handed’ Wilmington
Union (70) Vs. Wilmington (50)
An injury shifted the momentum and the game to Union High’s boys basketball team last night.

Wilmington senior Travis Brumbaugh took a charge in the third quarter and exited the game, paving the way for the Scotties to take a 70-50 win in the Union Booster Tournament.

“It was going back and forth in the first half,” Union coach Mark Stanley said. “Brumbaugh went down and, coming out of that, that seemed to hurt them. After that injury, I think they were shorthanded.”

“It spiraled down after that,” Wilmington coach Mike Jeckavitch said. “ But that’s no excuse. We need other guys to step up. We played extremely well in the second half, but Union is a good basketball team. They used their quickness to their advantage.

“Travis will be all right. He busted a couple of teeth and got a couple of stitches. I assume he’ll be out Tuesday. Now it’s time for some of the younger guys to step up a little bit.”

The Greyhounds (2-5) only trailed by three points after the first half, but were outscored 34-17 the rest of the way.

Cornell Charles paced the Scotties (5-4) with 21 points. Garrison Bell followed with 11 and Tre’von Charles chipped in 10.

“Any night it could be any one of the guys,” Stanley said. “He was hot early, Bell hit two threes right out of the gate. If you guard Cornell, he’ll dish it and if you leave him open, he’ll shoot it.”

Spencer DeMedal had an overall impact on the game with a team-high 13 points and added nine rebounds, seven assists and six steals.

Union will meet Laurel in the championship game at 7:30 p.m., while Wilmington will battle Lowellville at 4:30 p.m.
