Ellwood just misses first section win
Moon (49) Vs. Ellwood City (39)
The Ellwood City Lincoln High girls basketball team was on the cusp of picking up an elusive section win.
The Lady Wolverines, however, faltered and lost a 49-39 WPIAL Section 3-AAA contest against Moon last night
The loss makes 10 straight section defeats this season and brings Ellwood City’s consecutive section-loss streak to 85 over the past seven years.
The Lady Wolverines (0-10 section, 5-13 overall), though, held their own until the fourth quarter. The Lady Tigers (5-6, 6-13) took a 24-23 lead at the half.
Ellwood City trailed by one point until the last six minutes while Moon went on a 9-0 run to close the game.
“We played as well as we could and got beat by a team that’s probably going to the playoffs,” Lady Wolverines coach Bill Gottuso said. “They just wore us down. (Becca) Pollack was key inside and was tough to stop, so it wasn’t for a lack of effort.”
Pollack led all scorers with 26 points for the Lady Tigers.
Alyse Washington paced Ellwood City with 13 markers.
