Ellwood girls clinch long-awaited playoff berth
Ellwood City (49) Vs. New Castle (33)
The Ellwood City Lincoln High girls basketball team is going to the playoffs.

Three players scored in double figures to lift the Lady Wolverines to a 49-33 WPIAL Section 2-AAA road win over New Castle.

It’s the first WPIAL playoff berth for Ellwood City (5-7, 11-10) since the 1997-98 season. The Lady Wolverines finish section play tied for fourth with Hopewell (5-7, 9-12). The teams split the series and both teams will advance to the district playoffs.

The top four teams plus ties that can’t be broken by virtue of head-to-head meetings move on to the postseason.

Bailey McKinney paced Ellwood City with 15 points and Karington Ketterer was next with 12. Jocelyn Guy followed with 10.

Carmie Matarazzo netted a team-high 13 markers for the Lady ’Canes (1-11, 3-18). Abba Frengel contributed seven tallies for the hosts.

Attempts to reach Ellwood City coach Jolene Servick for comments and additional information were unsuccessful.
