McHale leads Lady Lancers
Neshannock (57) Vs. Quaker Valley (41)
Neshannock High girls basketball standout Madison McHale is on a roll.

McHale continued her torrid play for the Lady Lancers on Saturday.

McHale poured in a game-high 30 points to propel Neshannock to a 57-41 win over Quaker Valley in the first round of the Neshannock Christmas Tournament.

McHale was coming off a 36-point effort in a 59-57 WPIAL Section 1-AA road win over Riverside on Dec. 22.

“I’m trying to set her up in different situations,” Lady Lancers coach Luann Grybowski said of McHale. “She’s running the point, some post. We’re mixing it up a little bit and that’s been working out for us.

“She’s improved and is attacking the rim and drawing some more fouls.”

A 5-foot-7 senior guard, McHale scored 18 of her markers in the final frame for the Lady Lancers (6-1). She was 13 of 19 at the foul line, including 12 of 16 in the fourth quarter as Neshannock outscored the Lady Quakers, 25-10, in the pivotal period.

“When a game gets close at the end and they’re fouling, we want the ball in her hands and she wants it in her hands,” Grybowski said. “That shows her leadership and maturity as a senior.”

McHale, who is averaging 20.7 points a game, added six rebounds.

Quaker Valley (4-4), a Class AAA school, trailed 32-31 after three quarters. But the Lady Quakers turned the ball over six times in the final frame.

“It was defense again,” Grybowski said of her team. “(Cassidy) Burrelli did a good job on (Alana) Davidson in the post. For her to be mismatched like that, she toughed it out; that was a key.

“I think my kids are playing exceptionally well on the defensive end. That’s what we have to do.”

Erin Warvell backed up McHale’s effort with nine points and three assists. Burrelli pulled down a game-high 15 rebounds to go with her five points and three assists.

Karen Pugh provided 16 points for Quaker Valley.
