’Canes rally past Montour to remain unbeaten
New Castle (60) Vs. Montour (44)
The New Castle High boys basketball team capped off a tough weekend in style Saturday night.

Shawn Anderson poured in a game-high 29 points to guide the Red Hurricane to a come-from-behind 60-44 win over Montour at the Coaches vs. Cancer Clash of the Titans at Geneva College.

“When you play Montour, it’s very important to play with the lead,” New Castle coach Ralph Blundo said. “Shawn really put us on his back.

“We went to him on the blocks and he just made play after play for us.”

New Castle (13-0), which is ranked No. 1 in the WPIAL in Class AAAA by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, trailed 14-11 after the first quarter and 27-24 at the half. The ’Canes were coming off an 88-43 road win over North Allegheny (11-1) on Saturday in a Section 3 matchup. The Tigers came in ranked No. 2 by the Post-Gazette.

The Class AAA Spartans (8-4) eliminated New Castle, 50-43, in the PIAA Class AAA playoffs last year, handing them their lone loss of the season.

Blundo believes his players came in with extra determination against the Spartans.

“I think it was probably important for them,” Blundo said of his team defeating Montour. “It was something that was tough for them to handle last year and it was a game on our schedule that we wanted to win.”

Devin Wilson led the Spartans with 26 points.

“It was exactly what we expected,” Blundo said of the matchup with the Spartans. “Wilson is so good at what he does. He’s the best in the WPIAL at dictating tempo.”

The ’Canes took the lead in the third quarter and held a 45-40 buffer going to the fourth. Montour managed just four Wilson free throws in the final frame.

Malik Hooker chipped in with 18 markers for the winners.

New Castle extended its regular season winning streak to 37 in a row. The ’Canes’ last loss in the regular season came at Blackhawk, 58-54, on Feb. 8, 2011. In fact, New Castle’s last home loss was an 85-83 setback to Sharon on Jan. 15, 2011, for an active streak of 19 straight at the Ne-Ca-Hi Field House.

The ’Canes won 30 straight regular season games spanning the latter portion of the 2000-2001 season, the entire 2001-2002 season and the opening of the 2002-2003 campaign. New Castle won all 24 regular season games in ’01-’02. The ’Canes had a 19-game regular season winning streak, which spanned the 1997-’98 and the 1998-’99 seasons. New Castle won the final 11 regular season games in ’97-’98 and the first eight of the ’98-’99 seasons.
